White Whale - White Whale 7”

Hope everyone had a nice labor day weekend. As you can see, I sort of took an extended break due to the holiday. I don’t think I spent more than a couple hours or so at the house all weekend and was pretty exhausted by the end of it, so now I am playing catch up…
This 7-inch from Buffalo based White Whale has been kicking around for a bit now, however I just got it in the mail about a month ago I’d say. It’s been on a pretty consistent rotation ever since with its four cuts of throwback melodic punk that contains a bit of an extra edge for good measure. I’m guessing that since a couple of the White Whale guys also play in the more hardcore oriented Everything Falls Apart, that it kind of seeps in naturally here on the bands debut single. These four songs are over and out within the five minute mark, keeping things tight and to the point but oozing with hooks galore, which immediately caught my attention and much to my surprise as well after never hearing of these guys before. A pleasant surprise for sure. The tunes harken back to some of the best melodic punk the 90’s had to offer, and the two cuts on the b-side really nail it home with “Sunburn” and the all too appropriately named “1995”. Both songs really capture the best of what this band has to offer by really pushing up the tempo and going for broke instead of trying to reign it in some, which seems to be more of the case with the two tracks on the a-side. However, even those rise to the top in the end as these boys got a good thing going here with an amount of energy that sells it. Great debut from these guys and it looks like they already have another single out via Big Neck Records too. Sweet!
